Team chat

Article Content

Every team in Pilla has an automatic channel where all team members can communicate. Team channels are ideal for announcements and team-wide discussions.

What are team channels?

A team channel is:

  • An automatic conversation for each team
  • Includes all members of that team
  • Cannot be created or deleted manually
  • Named after the team

When you join a team, you are automatically added to its channel.

Accessing team channels

Mobile

  1. Open Chats
  2. Tap the Teams filter pill at the top
  3. Team channels appear in the list, showing the team's photo or initials as the avatar
  4. Tap a team to open it

Tapping a team channel opens the ThreaderScreen with the entity type "team". The header shows the team name as the title and "All team messages" as the subtitle.

Web

On the web, team channels appear in the Chats list. Clicking one opens the ChatSheet side panel with the team name as the title and "Team conversation. Type a message below to reply." as the helper text.

Empty state

If no one has sent a message in a team channel yet, the screen displays:

No messages in this team channel yet

Team channel vs group

Team channelGroup
Automatic membershipManual membership
All team membersSelected people only
Cannot edit membersCan add/remove members
Named after teamCustom name and photo

Use team channels for:

  • Team-wide announcements
  • General team discussions
  • Updates everyone should see

Use groups for:

  • Specific projects
  • Subset of team members
  • Topics not relevant to the whole team

Messaging in team channels

Team channels support all messaging features:

  • Text messages -- up to 1,000 characters
  • Image attachments -- up to 5 per message (camera or gallery)
  • Document attachments -- up to 10 per message
  • Reactions -- react to messages with emoji
  • Replies -- reply to specific messages (swipe right on mobile, or use the Reply action)
  • @mentions -- tag specific people or use @everyone to notify all members

Context messages in team channels

Team channels can also display messages with linked context. When someone sends a message from a shift, work or leaderboard thread and replies to a message in the team channel, the linked entity appears on the message. This shows:

  • An icon for the entity type (clock for shifts, checkbox for work, trophy for leaderboard)
  • A label (e.g. "{Name} Shift", the work name, or "{Month} Leaderboard")
  • A chevron-right arrow that navigates to the entity detail screen (mobile) or opens it in a new tab (web)

This lets the team see at a glance what a message is about without leaving the team channel.

Muting team channels

If your account has the mute permission (allow_mute_chats), you can mute a team channel:

  1. Go to Chats
  2. Find the team channel in the list
  3. Tap the bell icon on the right side of the row
  4. The icon changes to a bell-off icon, confirming the channel is muted

Tap the bell-off icon again to unmute.

Tips

  • Check team channels regularly for announcements
  • Use @everyone sparingly -- save it for important updates
  • Team channels update automatically when team membership changes
  • You can have multiple team channels if you are on multiple teams
  • Mute channels you do not need constant notifications for
