Managing chats
Article Content
Pilla lets you manage your conversations through a context menu on each chat row. You can edit group details, silence notifications for specific chats, and block or unblock users in direct messages.
Accessing chat actions
On the web, every row in the Chats table has a three-dot menu on the right. The options that appear depend on the type of conversation and your account settings.
| Conversation type | Available actions |
|---|---|
| Group | Edit Group, Mute / Unmute |
| DM | Mute / Unmute, Block User / Unblock User |
| Team channel | Mute / Unmute |
Mute and block options only appear if your organisation has enabled them in Chat Settings (see the admin settings section below).
Editing a group conversation
Only group conversations have the Edit Group option. The edit flow has two stages: updating participants, then updating the group name and image.
Stage 1 -- Edit participants
- Click the three-dot menu on the group row
- Select Edit Group
- The Edit participants panel opens on the right
- Use the search box at the top to find people by name, email or job title
- Each user row shows an avatar, their name and a circle checkbox. Your own row shows "(You)" next to your name
- Tap users to toggle their selection
- Click Next in the top-right corner when at least 2 people are selected
Stage 2 -- Edit group info
- The panel title changes to Edit group
- At the top, the group image button sits to the left of the Group name field:
- Group image (image picker, optional) -- tap the image button to choose a new photo from your device. If a photo already exists it is shown; otherwise a gallery icon appears
- Group name (text, required, placeholder: "Kitchen Team") -- the display name for the group
- Below the fields, selected participants are listed with their avatar, name, and an X button to remove them. You cannot remove yourself
- Click Save in the top-right corner
The Save button is only enabled when you have made at least one change (name, image or participants) and the group still has a name and at least 2 members.
After saving, a confirmation message reads: "{group name}" has been updated.
Muting and unmuting a chat
Muting a chat stops notifications for that conversation. You still receive messages, but they arrive silently.
Muting a chat
- Click the three-dot menu on the chat row
- Select Mute
A confirmation message reads "Chat muted". A bell-off icon appears next to the conversation type in the table.
Unmuting a chat
- Click the three-dot menu on the muted chat row
- Select Unmute
A confirmation message reads "Chat unmuted". The bell-off icon disappears.
Mute and unmute are the same underlying toggle. The menu shows Mute when the chat is not muted, and Unmute when it is.
Blocking and unblocking a user
Blocking prevents the other person in a DM from messaging you. This option only appears on direct message conversations.
Blocking a user
- Click the three-dot menu on the DM row
- Select Block User
A confirmation message reads "User blocked". A ban icon appears next to the conversation type in the table, and the message input is replaced with the text: "You can't send messages in this conversation."
Unblocking a user
- Click the three-dot menu on the blocked DM row
- Select Unblock User
A confirmation message reads "User unblocked". The ban icon disappears and the message input returns.
Chat settings (admin only)
Organisation owners can control whether muting and blocking are available to their team. These settings are accessed from the Chats screen menu.
- Open the Chats screen
- Open the menu and select Edit chat settings
- The Chat Settings panel opens with two toggle fields:
- Should users be allowed to mute individual chats? (No / Yes toggle) -- controls whether Mute and Unmute appear in the chat menu
- Should users be allowed to block other users from DMs? (No / Yes toggle) -- controls whether Block User and Unblock User appear in the chat menu
- Click Save in the top-right corner
A confirmation message reads "Chat settings have been updated successfully."
Tips
- Muting a chat does not remove you from the conversation -- you can still read and send messages, you just will not receive notifications
- Blocking only applies to direct messages. You cannot block someone from a group conversation or team channel
- When a conversation is blocked, neither party can send messages in that DM
- The bell-off and ban icons on the chat row help you quickly see which conversations are muted or blocked
- Mute and block options are hidden for all users until an admin enables them in Chat Settings
- Editing a group saves in the background -- the panel closes immediately and you will see a confirmation once the update completes
