Chat settings fields
Both fields use No / Yes radio buttons (circle checkboxes). Both default to No.
| Field | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Should users be allowed to mute individual chats? | No / Yes | No | When Yes, a bell icon appears on each conversation in the Chats list. Users can tap it to mute or unmute that conversation and stop receiving push notifications for it |
| Should users be allowed to block other users from DMs? | No / Yes | No | When Yes, users can block another person from a direct message conversation. A blocked conversation prevents either person from sending new messages |
Saving chat settings
Tap or click Save to apply your changes. The drawer closes straight away and a confirmation message appears once the settings have been saved.
How muting works for your team
When you set "Should users be allowed to mute individual chats?" to Yes:
- A bell icon appears on the right side of each row in the Chats list
- Tapping the bell toggles between muted and unmuted
- A muted conversation shows a bell-off icon instead of a bell icon
- Muted conversations still appear in the list but no longer send push notifications
When set to No, the bell icon is hidden and nobody can mute conversations.
How blocking works for your team
When you set "Should users be allowed to block other users from DMs?" to Yes:
- Users can block the other person in a direct message conversation
- A blocked conversation replaces the message input with "You can't send messages in this conversation."
- Blocking only applies to direct messages, not group conversations or team channels
- Users can unblock someone to resume the conversation
When set to No, the block option is not available to anyone.
Tips
- Both settings default to No, so muting and blocking are turned off until you enable them
- Muting is useful in large organisations where people belong to many team channels
- Consider enabling blocking if your team has raised concerns about unwanted direct messages
- Changes apply immediately after saving and affect all users in your organisation
- Chat settings share the same save mechanism as shift and work settings, so your other settings are preserved when you save here
