The personal safety of staff is of paramount importance. Under health and safety legislation, employers have a responsibility to create a safe working environment, minimise risks of violence, and ensure victims receive proper support.
Responsible Persons assess risks of violence amongst and towards staff, considering factors such as the venue's potential for confrontation, occupancy, operating hours, and whether staff feel safe at work. Security requirements may include CCTV and SIA-licensed security personnel, depending on the assessed risk.
Senior managers must never trivialise an employee's perception of being under threat. Such feelings should always be discussed seriously, with every effort made to achieve a resolution that minimises the employee's fear. Staff who become victims of violence during work will be offered support, which may include time off, counselling, work adjustments, or help with legal processes.
