Understand

Workplace conditions change constantly. Deliveries block walkways, equipment develops faults, spills go uncleaned and staff take shortcuts. People working in a space every day stop seeing these hazards, so a formal weekly walk with fresh, safety-focused attention catches what daily familiarity misses.

A safety walk is a structured inspection at a pace that allows proper observation. You stop and look at each area, checking high (lighting, storage), middle (equipment, surfaces) and low (floors, cables). Back-of-house areas, storage rooms, plant areas and external spaces often have more hazards than customer-facing areas but receive less attention, so check everywhere.

For each hazard, record what it is, where it is, what you did immediately and what further action is needed. Photograph hazards for clarity. Finding and reporting hazards is only valuable if issues get resolved, so track outstanding items and follow up at the next walk. Vary the timing of your walks so that you see how conditions hold under different pressures throughout the day.
