Learn how to assess working outside risks, build outdoor safety into your health and safety system with Pilla, and use AI to automate the process.

Join Liam Jones, founder of Pilla and a qualified food safety consultant, for a session on working outside risk assessments.

Understand

Outdoor service areas, car park duties, deliveries, outdoor events and external cleaning all expose staff to hazards that do not exist indoors. Weather extremes, uneven ground, vehicles, poor lighting and limited welfare facilities all need to be assessed and controlled.

Identify all tasks that require staff to work outside, from setting up furniture to receiving deliveries and managing external queues. Sun, rain, cold and wind all create risks including heat stress, hypothermia and slips on wet surfaces, so protective clothing, shelter and rotation schedules should be in place.

Uneven paving, wet leaves, ice and vehicle movements in car parks and delivery areas all require specific controls. Ground maintenance, lighting and pedestrian-vehicle separation should be assessed. Staff working outside still need access to toilets, drinking water, handwashing facilities and shelter for breaks.
