Understand
Under PUWER (The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998), employers must carry out risk assessments on any equipment with significant risk, such as slicers, dishwashers and vacuum packers. A separate assessment should be completed for every high-risk piece of equipment.
Start by identifying the specific piece of equipment, its location and the staff who operate it. Consider how each user could be harmed, including burns, cuts, entanglement or electrical shock. Regular servicing, inspection schedules and maintenance records are essential, and your assessment should describe who carries out maintenance and how often.
Training must cover safe operation, emergency procedures and any PPE requirements. Equipment may need physical guards, lockout/tagout procedures for power isolation and clear warning signage. Supervision should be organised so that you can review controls on a day-to-day and week-to-week basis to ensure the equipment remains safe.
