Understand

Work-related stress is recognised as an organisational issue, not simply an individual weakness. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers have a legal duty to assess and control the risks arising from work-related stress.

The HSE defines stress as the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or demands placed on them. Understanding this distinction between pressure and stress helps managers recognise when healthy challenge crosses into harmful stress. Stress risk assessments identify the sources of workplace stress across the HSE's management standards: demands, control, support, relationships, role, and change.

Managers must be trained to recognise the signs of stress in their teams, respond appropriately to concerns, and create working conditions that minimise unnecessary pressure. Confidential support arrangements must be in place so employees can access help without fear of stigma.
