Risk assessment is the foundation of effective health and safety management. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers must undertake suitable and sufficient assessments of risks to employees and others, and record the significant findings.
Risk assessment starts with identifying what could cause harm in your work activities. The focus should be on significant risks that could cause real harm, considering the work activity, environment, equipment, substances, and people involved. Control measures follow a hierarchy: eliminate, substitute, engineer, administer, then PPE.
Assessments must consider all groups who might be affected, including employees, contractors, visitors, and the public. Groups of workers who might be particularly vulnerable, such as lone workers, new starters, and pregnant workers, need specific attention. Training on key findings must be provided to all employees associated with assessed work tasks, and all risk assessments should be reviewed regularly.
