Join Liam Jones, founder of Pilla and a qualified food safety consultant, for a session on weekly PPE condition checks.

Understand

Personal protective equipment is the last line of defence against workplace hazards. Gloves, aprons, cut-resistant gear and oven mitts only protect your team if they are available, in good condition and the right size for each person.

Common PPE includes disposable gloves for food handling, rubber gloves for cleaning, cut-resistant gloves for knife work, heat-resistant oven mitts, aprons, eye protection and hearing protection. Your risk assessments determine what is required for which tasks. Disposable items like gloves and ear plugs deplete continuously through normal use, and weekly checks catch shortfalls before staff need items that are not available.

Worn, damaged or contaminated PPE provides no real protection. Oven gloves with thin spots conduct heat, and cut-resistant gloves with tears lose their protective properties. Damaged PPE should be removed from use immediately and replaced. PPE that does not fit properly will either not be worn or will not protect effectively, so your stock should include sizes that fit your entire team.
