Join Liam Jones, founder of Pilla and a qualified food safety consultant, for a session on daily opening safety checks.
Your premises sit empty overnight. Pipes can leak, equipment can fail, break-ins can occur and pests can enter. The opening check is a rapid assessment that catches these issues before staff start work or customers arrive, serving as the gate to opening.
Break-ins and vandalism, water leaks and flooding, gas leaks, equipment failures like refrigeration going down, pest entry and storm damage can all occur while the building is unoccupied. Use all your senses on arrival, as sight, smell and hearing can all detect problems. Fire exits must be unlocked and accessible during occupied hours, which is a legal requirement, so the opening check must confirm all fire exit doors are unlocked and routes are clear before the building is occupied.
If you smell gas on arrival, do not operate any switches as sparks could cause ignition. Open windows if safely possible, leave the building immediately and call emergency services from outside. If fire exits are locked or blocked, if there is a suspected gas leak, if there is an active water leak creating electrical hazards, or if there is evidence of an ongoing break-in, do not open for business. Address the issue first and only open when conditions are confirmed safe.
See how opening safety checks fit into your wider health and safety management system in Pilla. We walk through how to build this into your system so that your team has clear processes, accountability, and a documented trail that proves compliance.
Learn how AI can speed up this process and connect Pilla to your other tools, giving you a much more joined up system across your business.
