Understand

Manual handling injuries remain one of the most common causes of workplace absence and long-term health problems. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to identify all manual handling operations, assess the risks, and implement control measures.

Manual handling should be avoided where reasonably practicable. Where avoidance is not possible, mechanical means such as trolleys and lifting aids should be used to reduce injury risk. Assessments must be documented for all pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and supporting activities, considering the task, the load, the working environment, and the individual's capability.

Training must cover recognised handling techniques, including proper lifting posture, load assessment, and when to ask for help. Control measures must be monitored for effectiveness, and employees should be encouraged to report any health issues such as back pain or muscle strain so they can be investigated promptly.
