Join Liam Jones, founder of Pilla and a qualified food safety consultant, for a session on manual handling risk assessments.

Understand

Manual handling injuries are among the most common in the workplace, from lifting heavy deliveries to moving furniture and carrying loads. Grouping similar tasks together and assessing them properly helps prevent strains, sprains and long-term musculoskeletal problems.

List all lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling activities and group lower-risk tasks together, but carry out separate assessments for heavier or more complex activities like handling deliveries. Trolleys, sack barrows, ramps and adjustable shelving can all reduce the need for manual lifting.

Poor posture during lifting causes many injuries, so storage layouts, work surfaces and task design should minimise the need for stooping, twisting and over-reaching. Unstable or uneven loads increase the risk of drops and injuries, so assess how loads are packaged, stacked and secured before being moved. Regular observation, staff feedback and incident reporting help you identify whether your controls are working or need updating.
