Housekeeping and cleaning are paramount to ensuring the safety, health, and welfare of employees and others who enter your premises. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and associated regulations, businesses must make suitable arrangements for waste generated by their operations.
Businesses must separate waste into appropriate streams, prevent illegal waste handling and escape, transfer waste only to authorised persons, and maintain accurate transfer documentation. Waste storage must also be positioned away from final exit outlets to reduce arson risk.
Responsible persons identify and supervise housekeeping arrangements, including recording cleaning schedules and making risk assessments of the hazards the workforce is exposed to while undertaking cleaning duties. Competent, trained personnel must be identified to undertake housekeeping work, with appropriate PPE issued based on risk assessments. Regular inspections before, during, and after working hours ensure standards are maintained.
