Understand
Gas appliances such as ovens, cookers, and boilers present serious risks including fire, explosion, gas leaks, and carbon monoxide poisoning if not properly installed and maintained. Effective gas safety arrangements are essential for any business using gas equipment.
Only Gas Safe registered engineers can legally install, maintain, or repair gas appliances. You must verify an engineer's registration before allowing them to work on gas equipment. Mains gas equipment should be serviced annually or more regularly if required by manufacturer instructions or if the appliance is in heavy use.
Gas appliances need adequate ventilation to burn fuel safely. Poor ventilation can produce carbon monoxide, an odourless, colourless gas that can be fatal. Staff must report any smell of gas immediately so a competent engineer can investigate, and the area should be ventilated, ignition sources avoided, and the gas supply shut off if safe to do so.
