Understand
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person at any premises to carry out and maintain a fire risk assessment. This is not a one-off exercise and must be reviewed whenever there are significant changes to your premises, layout, equipment or occupancy.
Electrical installations, cooking equipment, heating systems and smoking materials are all common ignition sources, and each one needs to be assessed including whether arson has been considered. Escape routes must be clearly marked, unobstructed and sufficient for the number of people in your venue. Smoke detectors, fire alarms, manual call points and emergency lighting all need regular testing.
The type, number and placement of extinguishers must match the risks present, and signage should be visible so that staff know which extinguisher to use. Ongoing management includes regular checks, staff training, fire drills and keeping records, with responsibilities clearly assigned and being followed.
