Join Liam Jones, founder of Pilla and a qualified food safety consultant, for a session on weekly fire exit and escape route inspections.
When the fire alarm sounds, everyone needs to reach safety quickly. Smoke fills spaces within minutes, panic affects decision-making, and an escape route that seemed obvious yesterday becomes confusing in darkness and noise. Weekly inspections verify your evacuation system is ready.
Delivery boxes left in corridors, furniture moved for events and cleaning equipment stored on landings are among the most frequent fire safety failures. Escape routes should never be used for storage, even temporarily. The key test for any fire exit door is whether a stranger, in darkness, in panic, could open it and escape. Push bars must operate smoothly, doors must swing open fully without sticking, and there must be no chains, padlocks or additional locks.
Escape does not end when people get outside. External routes must lead to a safe place away from the building, so check that the area immediately outside fire exits is clear, external gates are unlocked and the assembly point is accessible and clearly signed. A locked fire exit during occupied hours is the most serious fire safety failure and must be unlocked immediately. If exits are repeatedly locked, install approved hold-open devices linked to the fire alarm that release automatically when the alarm activates.
See how fire exit inspections fit into your wider health and safety management system in Pilla. We walk through how to build this into your system so that your team has clear processes, accountability, and a documented trail that proves compliance.
