Fire safety is a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Failure to comply can result in criminal prosecution, significant fines, and most importantly, loss of life. Every business must implement and maintain a fire safety management system.
Responsible persons must be identified to oversee fire risk assessments, maintain fire-fighting equipment, ensure emergency procedures are in place, and coordinate fire drills. Fire risk assessments must identify sources of ignition, fuel, and oxygen, assess who might be at risk, and determine the control measures needed. Assessments must be reviewed annually or after significant changes.
All staff must understand the evacuation procedure, including alarm recognition, escape routes, assembly points, and their specific responsibilities. Detection systems, fire-fighting equipment, emergency lighting, and fire doors must all be maintained and tested regularly, with records of testing and maintenance kept.
