Understand

A fire alarm that fails during a real emergency is worse than having no alarm at all, because people expect it to warn them and when it does not, they lose precious evacuation time. Weekly testing catches faults before they become fatal failures.

Testing at the same time and day serves two purposes. Building occupants learn to expect it and will not panic when it sounds, and they know that if the alarm sounds at any other time, it is real. Rotating call points is equally important because if you only ever test the same one, you will never discover faults with the others. Each week, test a different manual call point so that over time every point in your building is covered.

Walk the entire building while the alarm is sounding. Listen in every room and corridor to confirm the alarm is clearly audible. Check that every sounder is making noise and every visual beacon is flashing. Then verify the system resets cleanly with no fault indicators on the panel. If a test reveals a fault, report it to your fire alarm maintenance company immediately, assess whether the affected area is still covered, and implement interim measures.
