Understand
Working with cleaning materials is essential for maintaining safe, hygienic premises, but these products can pose risks if not managed properly. Under COSHH 2002, employers must protect the welfare, safety, and health of employees who work with hazardous substances.
Every cleaning and sanitising product must be assessed for potential harm. Documented COSHH risk assessments identify hazards, required controls, and PPE needed for each substance used in your workplace. Staff must be trained on the hazards of products they use, correct dilution rates, proper application techniques, and what to do in the event of a spill or exposure.
Adequate storage space must be provided to keep products secure, separated, and properly labelled. Ongoing monitoring ensures cleaning processes remain effective and safe, including checking that staff follow procedures, products are used at correct concentrations, and PPE is worn as required.
