Learn how to carry out monthly AED checks, build AED inspections into your health and safety system with Pilla, and use AI to automate the process.
Join Liam Jones, founder of Pilla and a qualified food safety consultant, for a session on monthly AED (defibrillator) inspections.
An AED might sit unused for years, then need to work perfectly in the few minutes that determine whether someone lives or dies. Monthly checks ensure your defibrillator is genuinely ready for that moment.
Modern AEDs run automatic self-tests on internal circuitry and battery capacity, but they cannot check whether they are accessible, whether electrode pads are in date, or whether rescue kit accessories are present. Monthly human inspection covers what self-testing cannot. Electrode pads contain conductive gel that dries out over time, so expired pads may not adhere properly or conduct effectively. Check the expiry date printed on the packaging every month and order replacements two to three months before expiry.
A green status indicator is important but not sufficient. You also need to verify the AED is in its designated location, the cabinet is undamaged, the battery has adequate charge, and the rescue kit items are all present and in good condition. If the status indicator shows anything other than ready, or pads are expired, or the battery is low, the AED may not function in an emergency and needs immediate action.
See how AED checks fit into your wider health and safety management system in Pilla. We walk through how to build this into your system so that your team has clear processes, accountability, and a documented trail that proves compliance.
