I wrote this because I keep getting asked what to use for retail operations. I ran restaurants for years. I know the job: you want the floor to do the work without you chasing every check.

Retail operations here means the work in the store. Opening lists, planograms, HQ tasks, store visits, or a process you already know. People on a phone, not a laptop. I left out tills, warehouse management systems, and field service dispatch. Those are different jobs.

I built Pilla so you can turn a process you already know into a workflow on a canvas. Your team runs it on a phone, tablet or the web app. Pilla can fetch, decide and act while the work is happening. You keep the judgement calls.

If you want to try it on a process you already run, open the canvas.

I would pick Pilla when I want AI to act inside the work. I would pick YOOBIC when I want store tasks bundled with comms, learning and VM photo scoring. I would pick Zipline when I want HQ-to-store comms and execution. I would pick GoSpotCheck when I want field missions bundled with shelf photo AI. I would pick Jolt when I want lists bundled with labour tools and hardware.

How did we compare them?

I ask the same twelve questions I use on every vs page. For this shortlist I stayed with retail ops tools. I put Pilla first because that is the product I built, not because it wins every job. YOOBIC is store tasks, comms, learning and VM photo scoring. Zipline is HQ-to-store comms and a Day Sheet. GoSpotCheck is field missions plus shelf photo AI. Jolt is lists plus hardware. I left out office task apps, Zapier-style automation, rota products, warehouse management, tills and field service dispatch. I read their public docs on 17 September 2026. Where they stay quiet, I stay quiet.

I am Liam Jones. I founded Pilla after more than ten years running hospitality operations, food safety and frontline teams. On 17 September 2026 I sat with YOOBIC's homepage, task management, communications, learning, the copilots, the public API, integrations and the pricing page, Zipline's Day Sheet, Resource Library, assessments, Messenger, Zippy MCP posts, pricing and the App Store listing, GoSpotCheck's task types, Mission Builder, picture and signature tasks, conditional tasks, Advanced Logic, InfoURLs, Jobs, mobile navigation and the public pricing card, and Jolt's Operate help, list item types, SmartSense how-to-buy and the Digi acquisition page. Zipline public help is login-gated. I have not lived in a paid YOOBIC, Zipline, GoSpotCheck or Jolt account for this write-up. I am telling you what their docs say.

What should you take away?

  • I would pick Pilla if I wanted a process I already know drawn on a canvas, with branching, not a campaign form, Day Sheet or HQ task
  • I would pick Pilla if I wanted AI to fetch, decide and act inside the run, not a copilot, Zippy or a shelf photo score
  • I would pick YOOBIC if I needed retail store ops, comms, learning and VM photo scoring from one vendor
  • I would pick Zipline if I needed HQ-to-store comms and execution

I built Pilla for AI work management on the floor. YOOBIC, Zipline, GoSpotCheck and Jolt are better when the remaining job is a store ops suite, HQ-to-store comms, field missions with shelf photo AI, or lists plus hardware. None of them is a clone of the others.

Which tool is best for which job?

1. Pilla: Best for Operators who want AI to act inside the work

No LMS, HQ comms suite, shelf photo AI, labels or a time clock

I built Pilla so you can turn a process you already know into a workflow on a canvas. Your team runs it on a phone, tablet or the web app. Pilla checks the work as it comes in and follows up when something needs you. You keep the judgement calls. I did not build shift scheduling, payroll, HR, an LMS, shelf photo AI or date-code printers. If you need those, keep them on YOOBIC, Zipline, GoSpotCheck, Jolt or another vendor. You can open it the same day. Starter is £49 a month with 500 processed workflows. Pro is £99 with 1,000, and adds AI automations inside Pilla. Every new account gets a 14-day trial of every Pro feature, with no card. People are unlimited.

Pilla helps me have a day off knowing that procedures will be followed

  • Unlimited people, billed on processed workflows

Cons

  • No LMS, HQ comms suite or shelf photo AI

2. YOOBIC: Best for Retail chains that want tasks, comms, learning and store AI in one app

No public software price. I could not find an AI step inside a campaign

I would pick YOOBIC when the job is store tasks plus comms, learning and VM photo scoring from one vendor. Store teams log into YOOBIC ONE on a phone, tablet or the web app. They run missions, chat and take mobile courses. HQ builds campaign forms, collects photo proof, scores visits and watches dashboards. AI is an assistant for answers, a Store Manager Copilot for sales priorities and action plans, and a VM Copilot that reviews display photos. I could not find an AI step inside a campaign the worker is running. They quote you.

Pros

  • Tasks, comms and learning in one store ops platform
  • 1:1 and group chat, plus a newsfeed
  • VM Copilot reviews display photos
  • Public REST API and 200-plus integrations

Cons

  • No public software price
  • I could not find an AI step inside a campaign the worker is running
  • I could not find a YOOBIC MCP server
  • Quote by stores, locations or users and modules

Price: No public software price. Sales quote. Demo, product tour or 4-week proof of value.

Pilla vs YOOBIC

3. Zipline: Best for Retail brands that want HQ-to-store comms and execution

No public software price. I could not find an AI step inside a Day Sheet task

I would pick Zipline when the job is HQ-to-store comms and execution. HQ publishers send targeted messages and tasks onto the Day Sheet. You open one app for comms, a daily checklist, the Resource Library, audits, learning and Zippy. You track readership and photo proof, then follow up from overdue reports and assessments. Zippy answers from the brand library, and as of 2026 it can call customer MCP servers for live inventory or schedule data. I could not find an AI step inside a Day Sheet task. I could not find a Zipline MCP server for other tools to call. They quote you. Public help is login-gated.

Pros

  • Day Sheet, HQ messages and photo proof together
  • Messenger DMs and Groups
  • Resource Library and Zippy
  • Zippy can call customer MCP servers

Cons

  • No public software price
  • I could not find an AI step inside a Day Sheet task
  • I could not find a Zipline MCP server for other tools to call
  • Public help is login-gated

Price: No public software price. Sales quote. Demo and quote.

4. GoSpotCheck: Best for CPG, retail and beverage teams that want shelf photo AI plus field missions

You pay per user with a 20-user minimum. I could not find DMs in the core app

I would pick GoSpotCheck when the job is field missions plus shelf photo AI. FORM acquired GoSpotCheck in 2020. You still log into the GoSpotCheck app. Their marketing still lives on gospotcheck.com as a FORM company. FORM OpX is a separate product. You build Missions, collect photo and signature proof, and you can add image recognition, PhotoWorks, Insights and a Communications hub if you buy those add-ons. Essentials starts at $40 per user per month with a 20-user minimum. I could not find an AI step that fetches, decides or acts inside the Mission the worker is running.

Pros

  • Mission builder with conditional tasks
  • Image recognition on shelf photos if you buy it
  • PhotoWorks and Looker Insights
  • Public Essentials price

Cons

  • You pay per user, with a 20-user minimum
  • Image recognition, PhotoWorks, Insights and Communications are add-ons
  • I could not find video, audio or file upload as capture types
  • DMs sit on an add-on

Price: Essentials from $40 per user per month. 20-user minimum. Pro and Enterprise quote.

Pilla vs GoSpotCheck

5. Jolt: Best for Teams that want lists plus labels, sensors and labour tools

No public software price. I could not find an AI step inside a list

I would pick Jolt when the job is opening, closing and HACCP lists plus labels, sensors and a time clock from one vendor. Digi bought Jolt in August 2025. You still log into the Jolt app. Marketing now lives under SmartSense Operate. You prove the work with photos, signatures and timestamps. Hardware and rotas cost extra. They quote you.

Pros

  • Lists, logbook and work orders in one Operate product
  • Date-code labels, probes and sensors if you buy those modules
  • Rota and photo time clock in the same vendor

Cons

  • No public software price
  • I could not find an AI step inside a list
  • I could not find DMs or group chats
  • Hardware costs extra

Price: No public software price. Sales quote. Demo and quote.

Pilla vs Jolt

How should you choose?

If you need store tasks, comms, learning and VM photo scoring from one vendor, pick YOOBIC. If you need HQ-to-store comms and a Day Sheet, pick Zipline. If you need field missions plus shelf photo AI, pick GoSpotCheck. If you need labels, probes and a time clock from one vendor, pick Jolt. If you want the work drawn on a canvas and AI acting inside the run, with DMs and MCP, I would use Pilla, and I would keep HQ comms, learning, shelf photo AI, rotas and printers somewhere else.

Which should you pick?

Retail teams do not need one winner. They need the tool that matches the remaining job. I would pick Pilla when I want the floor to follow the process without me chasing every check. I would pick the others when a store ops suite, HQ-to-store comms, shelf photo AI, or lists plus hardware is the job.
